Acupuncture Ottawa

For 2,500 years, the Chinese have treated health problems by having hair-thin needles inserted at particular points on their body. Millions of people undergo this procedure, known as acupuncture, every year. How successful are these treatments? According to the National Institute of Health, acupuncture is effective for treating chemotherapy- and pregnancy-related nausea, and for relieving postoperative dental pain. It is also effective, when combined with other treatments, for: improvements to the immune system, colds, aiding in nerve function, helping pinched nerves, sciatica,  menstrual cramps, headaches, migraines, asthma, carpal tunnel syndrome, lower-back pain, general muscle pain (such as calf cramps, shin splints, hamstring strains and shoulder pulls), tennis elbow, osteoarthritis, and other forms of arthritis.

Treatment also aids in improving mood and energy, which is one reason why many patients choose it as part of their ongoing health plan. This thoroughly researched procedure is minimally invasive and performed in our clinic by properly trained practitioners

How does it work? Acupuncture is based on the theory that there are patterns of energy, called chi, flowing through the body. A disease or pain result when this energy is disrupted, weakened, or becomes stagnant. Your doctor can correct the flow of energy by inserting needles a fraction of an inch into specific points on the body.

There is evidence that acupuncture stimulates the release of brain chemicals that regulate pain and mood. Acupuncture does trigger the release of endorphins, which are the body’s natural painkillers.

How does your doctor decide where to insert the needles?

Your doctor chooses the acupuncture points based on your health history. There are specific points for each treatment, which are based on meridians in your body, and there are points that are specific to the condition you are being treated for. There are 12 meridians that connect with the organs of the body. For example, the heart meridian, which has a pathway travelling down the arm, is joined to the heart itself.

Does it hurt?

This varies from patient to patient. Some people feel a brief sting. Others feel a slight discomfort, which subsides after the needle is in. There may be slight bruising after the needle is removed. Depending on your situation, six to 10 sterile, disposable needles may be inserted for 15 to 30 minutes. Your doctor may pulsate a current through several needles if your condition warrants it.

Acupuncture is safe and effective, encouraging natural healing, and helps improve affected areas.

How often do you have to go?

Some conditions can be successfully treated in one to four Ottawa acupuncture treatments. Others may take up to 10 treatments. Patients suffering from chronic conditions may require regular treatments. Ask your doctor for an estimate of how many treatments it will take for your particular condition.
